A recent trip to Jamaica gave me inspiration and perspective. As a first generation American, this is the home of my ancestors and it was powerful to see where "we" started. The island is verdant, fruited, and enchanting. The people are vibrant and their faces expressive. I found that this trip, more than others spoke to my soul where questions of cultural identity and the concept of home are always muddled.
Have you ever had the breeze whisper to you about who you are? Have you heard the waves telling you of how your ancestors arrived?
Note: The fruit pictured in thumbnail is called Ackee. It is poisonous if eaten prior to ripening and opening naturally. Its eaten in a savory dish called Ackee & Saltfish and looks like scrambled eggs. Its delicious albeit a little pungent!
